Scottish High Performance Coach Dan Travers blasted his country’s top men’s players, saying they aren’t working hard enough. “I don’t really feel sorry for the boys,” said the former Commonwealth Games gold medallist. “They think they work hard, but they don’t. Nowadays, unless you give up everything for badminton then you are not going to succeed. There has to be no socialising - badminton has to be your whole life.” Travers was also quoted as saying that although the men’s team needs to work harder, the women’s team is much weaker. Full Story

The Jamaican Badminton Association received a $2.5million sponsorship from Cable & Wireless Jamaica. Cable & Wireless Jamaica’s CEO presented the cheque to the Association at a special luncheon where the Jamaican Netball Association was also awarded a sponsorship for $1.5million. The following is an excerpt from the story posted on the Jamaica Observer (Internet Edition):
“In relation to badminton, Davis said that the company took pride in the way the sport had developed over the years and was particularly pleased that all of the top national players have all come through the junior programme sponsored by CWJ for the past 12 years. He made special mention of Nigella Saunders the current national champion, who is top rated Caribbean female player and the first Caribbean badminton player to qualify for the Olympics.”
Of course this sponsorship is in Jamaican dollars, which leaves the sponsorship at approximately $40,000 US.
