In case you didn’t hear about it, Taufik Hidayat walked out of his singles match in the Hong Kong open after a line judge made a call which he disagreed with. This action was in violation of rule 4.3 which states that you cannot walk off the court during a match without the permission of the umpire. This afternoon in Madrid, the IBF disciplinary committee announced that Taufik will forgo any prize money and points earnings that he would have acuqired from the Hong Kong open. No details have been released as to how much money, or how many points Taufik will lose. Check out www.badmintonsite.com in a couple of days for the video of the press conference regarding this manner.

Today’s quarterfinal in Madrid was filled with suprise victories. First off, only one of the favored players in the men’s singles, Lin Dan, pulled through. Peter Gade, Chen Jin, and the #1 seed Lee Chong Wei were all defeated. Probably one of the bigger surprises occurred in the ladies’ singles…PETRA OVERZIER defeated 3/4 seed Chen Wang to make it into the semi-finals. The only native German to do in at least 20 years. In the mixed doubles event, the English team Clark and Kellogg defeated the Olympic Gold Medalists Gao Ling & Zang Jun. It could very well be an all England final. Stay tuned to find out. Check out www.badmintonsite.com for Jonas Lyduch’s Sem-final predictions.

Hola!! The 2006 World Badminton Championships are underway in Madrid, Spain and the BVM is right there to cover it. At the moment, the tournament is at the 2nd round of the draw. No major upsets to report, however, 9/16 Wei NG from Hong Kong was defeated by an unseeded player by the name of Taufik Hidayat…you may have heard of him…he’s the defending men’s singles champion who, in his 1rst round win over NG, recorded an amazing 260 km/h backhand smash winner!!! To put into perspective, the average women’s doubles smash is about 22okm/h. Stay tuned as the BVM will have frequent updates on this weeks matches.

The BVM was lucky enough to film yet another exhibition put on by the boys from North Carolina! Yes, Will Milroy, Mike Beres, Howard Bach, and Tony Gunawan met again in an electrifying exhibition match… this time in Calgary, Canada at the Glencoe Club. In addition to this, Tony Gunawan and Canada’s own Helen Nichol played against Canada’s favourite mixed team, Will Milroy and Tammy Sun. And if that wasn’t enough, Ardy Wiranata (you remember him? Former world #1, and 1992 Olympic Silver medalist) played a singles match against Kyle Foley, one of Canada’s top singles players. To inquire about how you can get a DVD copy of all these 3 awesome matches, please email info@vigormedia.com
