Singapore Open 2007 Set to Start Shortly

April 27th, 2007 by emmet

The fifth super series event is set to start May 1st (Tuesday) and once again it looks like this super series is going to provide some kick ass action. I wont go into too much detail about my opinions about the super series right now, other than to say it is way better than before in my opinion. Including the scoring system.

The biggest early round show down will of course be between Peter Gade and Taufik Hidayat who are drawn to play in the second round. The BWF Super Series page said the following NEWLY crowned Asian champion Taufik Hidayat faces the prospect of crossing swords with Denmark’s Malaysian Open champ Peter Gade Christensen in the second round of the men’s singles of the Singapore Open on May 1-6. Now, I might not have used crossing swords as my analogy, but nonetheless it will be an exciting match.

Another big match to watch will be between Lee Chong Wei and Hafiz Hashim both from Malaysia. How much does that suck for the Malaysian team? Your two best players drawn to play each other first round, and Roslin doesnt even get entered!? Obviously moving the BWF offices to Malaysia hasnt earned them any favours for the draws.

Of course the mens doubles should also be extremely exciting. It has been the other event that has seen considerable improvement for the overall level of the game. Even teams like Blair and Clark from England are starting to put on some good performances. Of course my favourite team is Gunawan and Wijaya after spending some time with Tony in North Carolina.

Stay tuned as we bring you commentary on the tournament coming up next week.

Offense will win games, defense will win tournaments!

Check out this amazing rally. The winners are definitely Kim Dong Moon and Ha Tae Kwon from Korea. I have no idea who the other team is or where they are from. This just goes to show how polished the Korean’s defense is, and how important it is for the game of badminton. ENJOY!!

Incredible Doubles Rally (Wijaya and Gunawan)

April 5th, 2007 by emmet

I was just sent a kick-ass doubles rally that I have to share with you guys. It features Candra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan, but I’m not too sure who is on the far side of the court. I think it is from the All England Open based on the background, but I’m not too sure. It is a really long rally, and a few times you think it’s going to be over, but Candra and Tony manage to stay in there. They are on defense pretty much the whole time. Reminiscent of the Sidek brothers from Malaysia back in the day, all defense basically. Check it out…

Lindsay Thomson Honoured by Canadian College Athletics Association

April 5th, 2007 by emmet

Douglas College student Lindsay Thomson was recently declared female athlete of the year by the CCAA for all sports. Lindsay is a second year nursing student as well as a star badminton player. Lindsay helped B.C. to win the national team title as well as the women’s singles title. This is a pretty big deal for badminton in terms of getting some good exposure and respect among other sports. Congratulations to Lindsay.
