Lee Chong Wei Continues to Suck

May 2nd, 2007 by emmet

Malaysias Lee Chong Wei has continued his sucking streak as he lost first round in Singapore to his teammate Hafiz Hashim. Hafiz won the match in three really close games, 16-21, 21-18, 22-20!! Another surprise was the loss of Chen Hong to Indonesias Sony Dwi Kuncoro. Kuncoro really hasnt had many big wins since the early days of his career, but it should be kept in mind that Chen Hong has announced his retirement, and might be gone pretty soon.

Now the big match to watch will be Peter Gade against Taufik Hidayat. This should be an interesting match up. These guys havent played each other in a long time, so its hard to predict. Plus Taufik is impossible to predict in terms of whether he will even try or not. He went three games in the first round against some unknown Malaysian. My pick is Gade, simply because this isnt a big event, and Taufik rarely seems to care except when he has picked a particular tournament as his target. Just watch, next Olympics he will be unseeded, and end up knocking out Lin Dan first round or something.

Another player to watch out for is Wong Choong Han. He has made it through qualifying once again, and luckily for him the second seed (Bao Chunlai I think??) has dropped out, so he has a good shot at the semi-finals actually. A win over Chen Yu wouldnt be totally unrealistic for Wong.

Lin Dan was threatened somewhat in the first round, going three games with Yan Kit Chan, but Lin Dan can be quite lazy in the first rounds sometimes. He is always a threat in every tournament he plays.

The big surprise in the mens doubles was the first round upset of Malaysian superstars (and super series title leaders so far) Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong. They lost to some other Malaysians (with impossibly long names) in three games. Otherwise all of the other seeds are still in. My favourites, Gunawan and Wijayaa, kicked some serious but first round by beating hometown favourites Wijaya and Saputra 21-7, 21-16.

Apparently some girls played too, with the Chinese or ex-national Chinese winning pretty much everything so far. Stay tuned for more tomorrow.
